Ierapetra is located in the southern part of Lasithi Municipality and is its largest city. It is also the fourth largest city on Crete. It is situated 36km away from Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the Municipality and 100km away from Heraklion. It is a beautiful coastal city with a population of 20,000 inhabitants, while it hosts thousands of tourists every year, thanks to its awarded beaches (2nd European beach prize). With cutting edge infrastructure, a well informed market and a wide range of ideas for entertainment, the city is the benchmark in southern Crete concerning night life that ranges from the well known raki boozers to elegant bars at its narrow streets. “Kirvia” festival is also organized in the city during summer, where a lot of interesting concerts, theatrical performances and many more cultural events take place. The city was established many centuries ago, while its importance was always notable, not only during the Minoan era or antiquity but also all along the Roman and Byzantine period, while it has also been significant during contemporary history. Ierapetra is built on the ruins of ancient Iearapytna, which was destroyed by an earthquake, possibly in 796. During its long history, the city’s name was also recorded as Kyrva, some time, in the past.
